Will Marijuana Smoke Help My Cat In Her Last Days Battling Cancer?

My cat has a tumor that is beyond our control now. My sweet little Shpunk will be put down on Saturday. She’s had chemo and a really good life but in her last days I was hoping that something hollistic would help her feel better. She’s not in any pain but she’s on medications and I know those don’t make her feel well. Can anyone help? I’ve read some stuff on this and I just want to know if marijuana will help her these last days. I’ve also heard about “blowing smoke in her ear” to get her high. Can someone shed some light?
Thank you

  1. I just want to say how sorry I am. I have a 15-year old cat right now with cancer. I’m having to give him 2 IV’s a day for a while to see if it helps since he’s dehydrated, but I realize its only putting off the inevitable. It’s a horrible thing to have to put IV’s in your cat every day, though he’s being a very good boy about it, I’m not doing so good with it. I think its a good idea to wait till Saturday, that gives you time to say goodbye and as long as shes not suffering, don’t let anyone make you feel bad for it. As far as getting her high, I don’t know, but someone did that to my dog a few days before she was to be put to sleep, and she started running like a puppy around the yard. I had no idea why she was doing it, didn’t find out about the pot till later. I don’t condone it, but then, it did make her feel pretty darn good, so most certainly am not angry about it. That was the most painfree that poor old dog had been for years, seemed to have really done magic with her arthritis. The person who did it loved her and just wanted her to be pain free, which I totally understand, and it worked, so hey, this is totally up to you. I don’t know how it was done, he took her into the bathroom with him, so I didn’t actually see it (would have probably flipped out anyway), and I don’t know if its the same with cats, but pot is suppose to make it easier for people going thru chemo and stuff, so it might just help her.
I think there are quite a few people answering this who are not comprehending the question. He’s not trying to get his cat high, he’s trying to ease the nausea caused by the chemo and the other medications. To simplify: The meds she’s on are making her sick to her stomach. Pot actually helps that particular situation.

  2. actually blow the smoke at her face, and just do a little bit. It will make her quieter for a while or act weird, but it is a short term relief. It is more for pain and nausea than anything.
Since she is close to her end (very sorry btw) you do not have to worry about the brain damage that is associated with it in cats. My roommate got her cat high way too much and it now has serious brain damage.

  3. You know what?, I think you should seriously go ahead and ask the vet, you should tell him you are serious about this, you want to make your cat feel better. I don’t know why people get so worked up about marihuana, it’s a drug, it’s a marvelous drug for people who are suffering. I have read that marihuana is really bad for our pets when ingested which is not the case, so go ahead and give your vet a serious, private call.
You shouldn’t go ahead and try it because in this forum nobody really knows how the cat will feel she might get anxious instead of high, with normal anesthesia cats get drunk not sleepy, so who best than the vet to tell you?.

  4. I highly doubt this, and I don’t think that you should ever force someone to smoke pot, even if it is a pet and some feel like they can do what they wish with them. I would say you really should NOT blow smoke in your cats ear or anything of the sort, and just put your cat to sleep or give it the best last days of her days. Good luck! :)

  5. I’m sorry about your inpending loss. If your cat is already under vet prescribed medication and is not in pain, just leave her alone to rest. I’m sure the medication is strong enough to not let your cat feel anything at all, and any additional drug will not help at all, but could make it worse.
By the way, getting high and equating it with pleasure is a human and learned emotion. For an animal, perhaps, it is no different from losing balance or having a massive confusion.

  6. Sorry about your cat…..just let her rest, love her as much as you can until Saturday, then just allow her to go.
    Prayers to you.

  7. You are better off putting her down. Your animal is suffering.

  8. I really doubt you can get something high by blowing smoke in its ear.
Cup the cat’s face in your hand and blow smoke and hold it there for a minute.
I know a lot of people are going to say its animal abuse, but it probably will make her feel better, and its not going to hurt her.

  9. That would be crule!!! I know you want to help her and that’s good, but not in this way! How would you feel if you were that sick and someone blew smoke in your ear, face??? Besides how could smoke in your ear get you high??? She’s gone through enough, the best way to help is keeping her company and be loving.

  10. I seriously doubt your cat will enjoy smoke being blown at her regardless of the orifice.
The best thing you can do for her is to comfort her as much as possible. I’m sure she probably enjoys being in your lap and having you stroke her.
I’m very sorry for your kitty and for your loss……….. :(

  11. I would say that it certainly couldn’t hurt to try the marijuana smoke. It has been scientifically proven that it helps humans with cancer, pain, etc. Anything to make her last days more pleasant would make both her and you fell more at ease.
I am sorry to hear about your kitty. My heart goes out to you.

  12. It could make her pee blood. Ask your vet if you don’t believe me. That’s a bad idea & animal cruelty as well.

  13. Cats are not people. What works for people, what’s good for people, what really won’t hurt people that much can kill a cat outright. Leave your cat alone or get it put to sleep if it is suffering.
Oh, and it doesn’t fight cancer in people. It alleviates pain and some of the side effects of treatment.

  14. NO for the love of GOD let this poor animal be in peace for her last few days on this earth.. HOW would you like smoke blown in your face….. just keep her as comfortable as you can

    Comment by muffett1 — June 25, 2009 @ 8:24 am

  15. What? Just leave her alone if shes not in any pain. Cats hate when you blow in their ears.

  16. I think the best thing you can do for your cat is to hold her and cuddle her all you can. Let her know she is loved right up to her last minute. I am sorry you will be losing your cat. Smoke all you want to get over your pain, but love your cat all you can while you still can.. Excuse me, but now I have to go find a hanky.

  17. If anything I think the pot smoke would make her feel worse. As long as she’s resting comfortably and doesn’t appear to be in any pain I wouldn’t bother her.

  19. I do know that a product called cola syrup has helped my dog with nausea. Plus its a whole lot cheaper. Look in your drug store by the pepto and anti-nausea medications

  20. Sorry. Let the poor wee baby be. If she’s on medication from the vet then leave it at that. Blowing dope into her ear may confuse her and make her hyper interacting with what she has been given for pain. Take her in on Saturday and let the vet send her on her way peacefully. Afterwards, look up The Rainbow Bridge on the internet. Beautiful poem, which will make you cry. I lost three cats last year; one was 21 and had to be helped on her way after a stroke. One was 14 and the other 12 both of which had tumors. Really hard thing to do. I wish you well.

  21. There are other holistic treatments out there. You should contact a Holistic VET asap. Please do not take it upon urself to traet ur cat, in such a serious condition. If you would like a sedative for your cat then contact your vet!

  22. i wouldnt cats dont like having their ears blown into and if smoke is bad for us its bad for them just comfort her in her last days

  23. I think that I would just hold and cuddle her as much as i could for the next few days and forget about the smoke. If it’s like you say and she is not in any pain, I would just love her to pieces . By the way..I hope that when you do put her down, you will hod her, and stroke her and tell her how much you love her and how much she has meant to you over the years, and your vet will give her a shot to relax her, and then the final shot where she will just go to kitty heaven. It’s not the easiest thing to do..but you will have peace of mind that you did this for her. We do this for our cats and it really does help to ease the pain, believe it or not. You have my deepest respect, you have tried everything that you could do, and now you can give her peace.

  25. I’m sorry to hear about your cat and for the insensitive comments from some of the users here. Although it may help, don’t you want her to be the Shpunk you’ve always known and loved in her final days? She might freak out and fear you, she may not be herself after that.
Also, to the users who respond to your question, yet condemn you for your decision,SHAME ON YOU!!

  27. Not really because its second hand smoke and the cat can’t breath enough to benefit it.

  29. sure, just keep her from blowing smoke in your face when she exhales (what a silly question)

  30. Teach her how to use a bong man……..
If you want to get her stoned you need to stick her in a huge plastic bag with yourself and your stoner buddies, then blow a few bowls with el-gato, and soon enough kitty will be in da-bag.
